"Dentist near me", "AC repair Andheri", "salon in Koramangala": for local businesses in India, Google Maps is often the first place a new customer finds you, and the listing they see is your Google Business Profile. It's free, and most businesses leave it half-finished. Here's how to set it up properly.
Why it matters
Your profile shows your rating, photos, timings, location, phone and a WhatsApp or website link, before anyone visits your website. For many customers, that's the whole decision. A complete, active profile with good reviews simply wins more calls than a bare one.
Google says local results depend on relevance, distance and prominence. A strong profile improves the two you control.
Step 1: Claim and verify
Search your business name on Google Maps. If a listing already exists, claim it; if not, create one at business.google.com. Verification is usually by phone, email or video. Use the business's own phone number and an email you'll keep.
Step 2: Fill in everything
- Business name: your real name, exactly as on your signboard. Adding keywords like "Best Salon in Delhi" breaks Google's guidelines and risks suspension.
- Primary category: the most specific one ("Dental clinic", "Interior designer", "Air conditioning repair service").
- Address and pin: check the pin sits exactly on your entrance. Wrong pins cost walk-ins.
- Service area: if you visit customers (AC repair, pest control, interiors), set the localities you cover.
- Hours: including Sundays and festival closures.
- Phone and WhatsApp: a number that's actually answered.
- Website: even a simple one-page site helps credibility. See what a website costs in India.
- Services and prices: list your services, with "starting from" prices where you can.
Step 3: Photos that sell
Upload real photos: your storefront (so people recognise it), inside, your team, and your work. For interiors and salons, before-and-afters are your best salespeople. Add new photos every month. Active profiles look alive.
Step 4: Reviews, the right way
- Ask every happy customer, at the moment they're happiest (after the haircut, the handover, the treatment). A QR code at the counter or a WhatsApp message with the direct review link works well.
- Reply to every review, in the language the customer used, politely, even to the angry ones.
- Never buy reviews or post fake ones. Google removes them and can penalise the listing.
Step 5: Keep it active
- Post updates or offers occasionally (festival offers, new services).
- Answer questions in the Q&A section before someone else does.
- Keep hours and phone current. A customer who arrives to a closed shutter won't come back.
Step 6: Answer fast
A great profile brings enquiries: calls, WhatsApp messages, website forms. If they wait hours for a reply, they message the next listing. Businesses that reply in minutes win far more of those enquiries. An AI assistant on WhatsApp can reply within a minute, answer the common questions and book the appointment, even at 11 PM.
Common mistakes
- A pin that's a few buildings off
- "Open 24 hours" when you're not
- A phone number that goes unanswered
- Stock photos instead of real ones
- Ignoring negative reviews
