How Much Does a Website Cost for a Small Business in India? (2026 Guide)

What a small business website really costs in India in 2026: DIY builders vs freelancers vs agencies, the yearly costs nobody mentions, and what you actually need.

Ask five people what a website costs in India and you'll hear five answers, from "free" to "two lakh". They're all right, because they're describing different things. This guide breaks down what you're actually paying for, the costs that come every year, and how to decide what your business needs.

The short answer

For a local business (a clinic, salon, shop, interior studio, coaching centre or contractor), a good website usually falls into one of three buckets:

OptionTypical costGood for
DIY website builder₹0 to start, then a monthly planTrying things out, very tight budgets
FreelancerRoughly ₹5,000 – ₹40,000 one-timeMost small businesses
AgencyRoughly ₹40,000 – ₹2,00,000+Larger sites, online stores, custom features

Those ranges are wide because "website" covers everything from one page to a full online store. The right question isn't "what's the cheapest?" but "what does my site need to do?"

What you're paying for

Every website has the same four ingredients, whoever builds it:

  1. Domain name: your address, like yourclinic.in. Usually a few hundred to about ₹1,000 a year for .in or .com. Renew it every year or you lose it.
  2. Hosting: where the site lives. Simple, fast sites can be hosted cheaply or even free on modern platforms; heavy WordPress sites with plugins need more.
  3. Design and writing: making it look trustworthy and saying the right things. This is where most of the cost, and most of the value, sits.
  4. Build: turning the design into a fast site that works on every phone.

A cheap site usually saves money on number 3. That's the part customers notice.

The costs nobody mentions

  • Yearly renewals. Domain, hosting, and sometimes a theme or plugin licence. Ask for the yearly total in writing before you start.
  • "Small changes". Some builders charge for every edit after launch. Ask how updates are handled and what they cost.
  • Who owns it. If the domain is registered in the builder's name, or the site only runs on their account, moving away later can be painful. The domain should be in your name.
  • Speed. A slow site on mobile data loses visitors before it loads. Page builders and heavy themes are the usual cause.

What a small business website actually needs

Most local businesses don't need twenty pages. They need one or a few pages that answer, fast and on a phone:

  • What do you do, and for whom? One clear sentence at the top.
  • Where are you, and when are you open? Address, map, timings.
  • What does it cost? Even a "starting from" price builds trust.
  • Can I trust you? Real photos of your work, your team, your space. Real reviews if you have them.
  • How do I contact you? A WhatsApp button and a phone number that work with one tap.

If your customers mostly find you on Google Maps and message on WhatsApp, a sharp one-page site that does all of the above will beat a slow ten-page site almost every time.

DIY, freelancer or agency?

Choose DIY if you're comfortable writing and taking good photos, and you'll keep paying the monthly plan.

Choose a freelancer if you want something professional without agency overheads. Look at sites they've built, ask who writes the content, and confirm the domain will be yours.

Choose an agency if you need an online store, bookings, logins or integrations, and have the budget for a team.

Questions to ask before you pay

  • Can I see three sites you've built, live?
  • Will the domain and hosting be in my name?
  • Who writes the text on the site?
  • What exactly will I pay every year after launch?
  • How long until it's live, and do I see it before I pay in full?
  • How fast does it load on a phone?

What XMEL charges

We build websites for Indian small businesses at a fixed price: ₹2,500 for a one-page site and ₹4,000 for a multi-page site, with ₹500 to start (refundable before your build begins) and the rest only after you've seen the finished site. It's written around your business, built mobile-first, and yours to keep. See website development for what's included, or browse real websites we admire for ideas.

The short version

A small business website in India can cost almost anything, but what matters is whether it makes a stranger on their phone trust you enough to message. Spend on clear writing and real photos, keep the domain in your name, ask for the yearly costs upfront, and don't pay for pages nobody will read.
